Story of the mountain hotel
The story of Sliezsky dom begins in 1871. The building has changed its look several times since then, with the most recent reconstruction completed in 2011 when the highest-altitude mountain hotel in Slovakia gained its present appearance. One of the most prominent guests to visit the hotel was Pope John Paul II.
First building made of stone
The history of Sliezsky dom dates back to 1871 when the first stone building was built here. When an avalanche swept it away three years later, a new single-storey building was erected in its place, with eight rooms in total, including four guest rooms. Opened on 2 June 1895, the building also included two storage rooms, a kitchen and a cow barn.
Origins of a mountain lodge
A spacious extension was added to the original building between 1907 and 1908, increasing the overall accommodation capacity of Sliezsky dom to 40 beds. The lodge was open to the public three months a year, from 15 June to 15 September.
Over the years, Sliezsky dom was a place of first ski training courses and also served as a training centre for mountain troops during the First World War. The valley of Velická dolina had gradually increased in popularity and Sliezsky dom became an ideal starting place for climbers set to conquer Gerlachovský štít. This was also one of the reasons it underwent another reconstruction, completed in 1959. The modernised building offered accommodation in simple 12-bed rooms and a couple of more comfortable 3- and 4-bed rooms for a total of 103 guests. The comfort improved considerably with the installation of a cold and hot water supply system, power supply and central heating. However, the modernised lodge did not serve hikers for long; it burned to the ground in 1962.
Mountain hotel Sliezsky dom
The construction works on a “Palace under Gerlach” began in 1965. The new hotel was opened three years later, with an overall capacity of 130 beds, later extended to 148. The hotel was privatised in 1988 but its new owner lacked funds to operate it, therefore, its doors were often closed to the public.
Visit by Pope John Paul II
Over the years, Sliezsky dom provided shelter to countless hikers, climbers and skiers, including many prominent figures. During his 1995 visit, Pope John Paul II consecrated a wooden cross which still stands above Sliezsky dom in memory of the Holy Father’s official visit.
Mountain hotel Sliezsky dom at present
Sliezsky dom underwent an overall reconstruction between 2009 and 2011 and transformed into a modern mountain hotel with the complete offer of services for both individual and business clients. Thank to a sensitive architectonic approach, the hotel’s exterior and interior preserved its traditional style typical of the High Tatras, underlined by the application of high-quality natural materials, and photographs of the High Tatras by Ladislav Janiga decorating its walls.
The hotel boasts 30 standard rooms and five family rooms. Four Classic suites and three De Luxe suites are located on the hotel’s top floor. A new Basic suite is now also available, for two persons with no extra bed, similarly to the Classic suites. The hotel has a barrier-free standard room, as well.
The high standard of accommodation services is supplemented by the unique gastronomic experience in the hotel’s a la carte restaurant and the wellness centre with the unparalleled view of Velické pleso. The hotel can also provide accommodation to less demanding hikers who can stay in a 12-bed tourist room.
Thanks to its unique location and the full range of services, the Sliezsky dom mountain hotel is a great place for everyone who seeks rest and privacy away from the traditional tourist centres. The hotel is also the perfect venue for family celebrations, weddings and corporate events. A self-service restaurant and an outdoor terrace with a view of the valley of Velická dolina are also available in the summer.

Parking in front of the hotel
If the weather conditions are good, we offer our guests a possibility to use parking places right in front of the hotel.
