The story of the Mountain Hotel

1871
The first stone building

The history of Sliezsky Dom began in 1871 when the first stone building was erected on its site. However, it was swept away by a snow avalanche just three years later. A single-storey new building later replaced it with eight rooms, four for guests. The building included two storerooms, a kitchen and a stable for two cows, which supplied the operation with fresh milk. The building was inaugurated on 2 June 1895.

1907 and 1908
Creation of the Mountain Lodge

In 1907 and 1908, the original lodge was enlarged with a spacious extension, increasing the capacity of the Sliezsky Dom to 40 beds. It was open from 15 June to 15 September.

Sliezsky Dom was the venue for pioneering ski training and served as a training centre for mountain troops during the First World War. Over the years, the Velická Valley gradually gained in popularity, and Sliezsky Dom became an ideal starting point for climbing Gerlach Peak. Thanks to this, it underwent further reconstruction, which lasted until 1959. The renovated lodge provided accommodation in simple dormitories for 12 people and more comfortable accommodation in 3- to 4-bedded rooms with wardrobes for 103 people. Introducing hot and cold water, electricity, and central heating significantly enhanced the guests' comfort. However, the renovated lodge did not serve the tourists for long. In 1962, it caught fire and burned down completely in one night.

1965
Sliezsky Dom Mountain Hotel

In 1965, the construction of the "Palace under Gerlach" began. The new hotel was put into operation three years later. At its opening, the new Sliezsky Dom had a capacity of 130 beds, which was later increased to 148 beds. At the beginning of the 1990s, the hotel was privatised, but the new owner needed more money to run it, so the hotel doors often remained closed to guests.

1995
Visit of John Paul II.

Sliezsky Dom provided shelter for countless tourists, climbers and skiers, among whom there was no shortage of prominent personalities. In 1995, it was visited by Pope John Paul II, who consecrated a wooden cross during his visit. The cross is still erected above the Sliezsky Dom in his honour today.

2009 to 2011
The current Sliezsky Dom Mountain Hotel

Sliezsky Dom underwent a complete reconstruction between 2009 and 2011, and today, it is the site of the highest mountain hotel with a comprehensive range of services for individual and corporate clients. Thanks to a sensitive architectural approach, the exterior and interior of the hotel have retained the traditional Tatra style, whose atmosphere is enhanced by using quality natural materials and photographs of the High Tatras by Ladislav Janiga.

The hotel has 44 rooms. The hotel also offers a wheelchair-accessible standard room.

The high standard of accommodation services is complemented by unique gastronomy in the hotel's à la carte restaurant and a wellness centre with an unrepeatable view of Velické Tarn. The hotel tries to meet the needs of less demanding tourists, for whom it provides accommodation in a tourist hostel with a capacity of 12 beds.

Thanks to its exceptional location and complexity of services, the Sliezsky Dom Mountain Hotel  is suitable for anyone looking for relaxation and privacy away from traditional tourist centres. It also provides excellent conditions for family celebrations, weddings and corporate events. In the summer season, a self-service restaurant and an outdoor terrace overlooking the Velická Valley are also available for guests.
